Patterns in Nature: Design Custom Rugs

From the wheeling of Sand Hill Cranes across the sky to the patting of raindrops in puddles, Weese+Design custom rugs interpret patterns that reverberate in your home or office. The importance of pattern in design can be seen everywhere we look–from naturally occurring patterns found across the universe to intricately created patterns used in commercial production everyday.

Custom rugs by Weese+Design are available in a variety of colors, patterns, and different sizes. Our natural rugs are contemporary, elegant, and timeless–suitable for all styles of interiors. Please visit WeeseRugs.com, to obtain more information regarding our custom rugs.

RAIN shown in tomato/oat

Manufactured Patterns Influence Custom Rugs

Patterns created by human activity also inspire. The intersections between these worlds hold mystery and intrigue. The human brain forges interesting patterns from a random assortment of manufactured objects in our world.

Many of the shapes, angles, and tangents that form these intricate patterns are made beautiful by nature’s most abundant natural resource—light. In fact, light and shadow play an equally important role in determining the rigor of a pattern.

Please view our gallery to see patterns from both the Prairie and Flora Collections.

The silk used for the accent (the design that creates the pattern), comes from the industrious silk worm. This creature has long been heavily relied upon in the cultivation of high-grade silk for commercial use.

Every one of our custom rugs are hand-knotted at one-hundred knots per square inch using 100% Tibetan wool with silk accents. These accents add a subtle touch of beauty giving natural depth too our collection of elegant and timeless custom rugs.

When light hits the silk threads, a luminosity occurs that creates visual depth in the carpet. The light modulates and as you walk around the rug, it appears lighter or darker depending on the nap. This variation in tone adds a dynamic quality to each and every one of our custom rugs.

The Silkworm:

(n.) any of various forms of caterpillars that produce cocoons of fine, strong, lustrous fiber that is the source of high-grade commercial silk.

Approximately 5000 years ago in the Orient, the silkworm was domesticated in order to produce silk for the textile industry. By eating massive amounts of mulberry leaves, the caterpillar secretes a single silk fiber up to 3000 feet long from its salivary glands, in order to produce a cocoon in hopes of incubating into a moth.

In the production process, the cocoons are boiled in water to rid them of any destructive enzymes. As they are boiled, the cocoons unravel and return to their original thread format. These lengthy threads are spun together and then dyed to make the silk yarns in Weese+Design custom rugs in a process that is thousands of years old.

Custom Rugs–Subtleties In Color

Vibrant colors or muted colors, both palettes are represented in Weese+Design custom rugs. In the Prairie Collection, Weese takes her cues from the colors represented by the natural world in prairies across the Midwest and the light that changes through the four seasons. The life-giving plants of the prairie maintain a complex dependency with the soil, wildlife, and insects, providing the symbiotic relationship that allows nature to flourish.

Your Prairie rugs are very subtle, really refined and a new idea. Brava! And the name of the collection is perfect, combining the Midwest with the Tibetan plateau.

Weese+Design: Dyeing Process in Custom Rugs

Our Tibetan wool is dyed with Swiss chrome dyes and vegetable dyes, depending on the hue. For the more neutral colors we use vegetal dyes but the more vibrant hues can best be achieved by using a tried and true Swiss dye, invented in Switzerland at the turn of the century. Today, Swiss dyes are less toxic than their earlier cousins as they are AZO chemical free.

In the dyeing process, all dye residue is washed out of the rug leaving no residual chemicals. The final product is 100% natural Tibetan wool, ready for the next step in the hand-crafted process.

Tibetan rugs have been both a source of modest warmth and a contemporary luxury for many years. These timeless and beautiful rugs are still made by Tibetan refugees in Nepal. Using the ancient time-tested method of hand knotting with the sennah knot, lustrous and dense rugs are created at 100 knots per square inch. Weese+Design collaborates with the Tibetans to produce contemporary rugs to please today’s palette.

Tibetan Shepherds Keep Time

Tibetan shepherds still keep time with an ancient carved wooden stick called a timestick. A hole is drilled in the octagonal stick for each season of the year. A peg is inserted in the appropriate hole. Though crude and not as accurate as a Swiss watch, the watchers of the flocks know roughly what time it is when they need to. This ancient tool helps shepherds periodically move their sheep to fresh pastures and even provides a sturdy crutch while keeping a close watch over their wool producing herds.

Tibetan nomads have been sheperds for thousands of years on the high plateau in Tibet. With the help of dogs and more recently horses, they roam the plateau with their sheep in order to supply some of the finest wool in the world. This lanolin rich wool provides the region with an integral source of life for the people, and will continue to be a most sacred valuable resource for decades to come.

Tibetan Rugs are Heralded Throughout History

Tibetan rugs have been used in a multi-purpose way for centuries in traditional Tibetan culture. Still today, we see Tibetan rugs used as prayer rugs, for placing at the base of columns in monasteries, for padding a wooden saddle while on horseback, and for sitting on during meditation, as well as sleeping upon.

Sitting Rug

Traditional Imagery In Tibetan Rugs

In traditional Tibetan Rugs, one often sees depictions of:

Dragons (as benevolent protectors), Snow Lions (mythical creatures representing fearlessness and cheerful mind), Tigers, (often associated with high lamas and aristocracy), Florals, (perhaps derived from Chinese textiles), Geometric Patterns, (used mostly by the nomads), and the Endless Knot, (the ancient Buddhist symbol representing the interweaving of the spiritual path, the flow of time and movement, and eternity). Weavers of Tibetan rugs more loosely interpret these symbols while weaving which contrasts with the highly structured Thangka paintings, often depicting the life of the Buddha.

Snow Lions

Throughout history Tibetan nomads have made beautiful Tibetan rugs by shearing, carding, washing, spinning and dyeing wool from local sheep that they shepard on the Tibetan plateau at the high altitude of 15,000 feet. Sheparding is one of the oldest occupations beginning roughly 6000 years ago in Asia Minor. Tibetans, with the help of guardian dogs–often the Tibetan mastiff–move their sheep across the high plateau in search of pasture.

Beautiful Tibetan Rugs Spring From Long History

For centuries, Tibetans have been hand knotting Tibetan rugs made from their local sheep’s wool. Some of the finest weavers in the world, they use an ancient knot, the Sennah knot, which originated in Persia. It is an asymmetrical double knot that allows for extra strength in the final product.

Weese+Design rugs are elegant and timeless, and suited for all styles of interiors – from traditional to transitional, from mid-century modern to contemporary. The patterns are subtle and sophisticated and the color palette is rich and varied. Truly unique and exquisitely crafted, these rugs are woven to last many lifetimes. custom rugs, tibetan rugs, custom tibetan rugs, modern rugs, designer rugs, elegant rugs, handwoven rugs, handmade rugs Transcript: As an artist my deepest inspiration comes from the natural world. So the Prairie Collection is a reflection of weather on the prairie, of landscape, deep serenity. The Floral Collection is about the joy and whimsy of being in the garden, in the compost pile, lifting up the leaves, working the soil, watching the flowers or plants, perennials annuals whatever they are bloom grow die and come back again. So the two collections are quite different, but they are related in that they are quiet and strong, serene and powerful, and paying homage to the natural world.
